Modern speedboat to race WWII plane in local air show
Those who attend the Fort Lauderdale Air Show this weekend will be able to see a WWII training plane face off against a sleek, modern-day speedboat.
Both the plane and the boat reach up to speeds of about 150 mph. However the speedboat is much more susceptible to bad ocean conditions, like choppy waves or high winds.
According to organizers, the race is very complicated and dangerous, as it involves the plane descending from a high altitude in a short amount of time.
The air show will kick off on Nov. 21 and has added restrictions to reduce the chance of contracting the coronavirus.
First female astronaut took off from American soil since 2011
Dr. Shannon Walker was the first woman since 2011 to enter orbit from American soil aboard the SpaceX and NASA Crew-1 mission on Sunday.
The launch was successful and the crew of four astronauts is expected to arrive at the International Space Station sometime this morning. This is Walker’s second trip to the ISS.
Bad weather from Hurricane Eta delayed the launch, which was originally scheduled for Saturday.
This is a landmark mission for SpaceX as it’s the first fully operational crewed mission for the company started by tech mogul Elon Musk.
Court throws out lawsuit aiming to shut down Florida’s beaches
On Friday an appeals court rejected a lawsuit that would force Governor Ron DeSantis to shut down all of the beaches across the state to prevent the coronavirus from spreading further.
The court ruled that the lawyer — Daniel Uhlfelder who drew national media attention after dressing up as the grim reaper in the courthouse — had no legal basis to bring the lawsuit.
Uhlfelder defended himself, saying, “The governor abrogated his constitutional authority and he has endangered lives.”
Since his suit was shot down in appeals, Uhlfelder has little hope for success.
50 local foster kids recently adopted by 30 Tampa families
Over the weekend, 30 families all celebrated together with the 50 foster kids they had just welcomed into their homes for good.
One of the children adopted, 17-year-old Ashanti, had been in the foster care system since she was a year old.
An adoption official wrote, “This is what our child welfare system is all about. It’s about creating forever families and getting these kids in permanent homes and it’s a great celebration.”
